  28. Hello, I just bought the above game and after I successfully installed
  29. it to my drive and proceeded to run SETUP I get the message:
  30. Abnormal program termination: Memory Protection fault
  31. CS:EIP=000Ch:0006C9C5h

  33. I did all sorts of things with the hardware 'coz I know it runs on other
  34. systems. I took out all the cards and left the basics, I fiddled with the
  35. CMOS settings and still no go. I tool out the SB16 SCSI card and my GUS
  36. card and added them one at a time and still no go. I also played around 
  37. with the config and autoexec settings but nothing seems to @$#@# work.
  38. Does anyone have a clue or fixed this problem. If someone has
  39. Psygnosis' E-mail address can you send it so I can speak to them.
  40. I am desperate I like this game but don't want to have to return it.
  41. I know it's not the SB16 or the Gus card. I have a feeling it's the
  42. fact that I am using a SCSI II CD Drive....

  123. Well, I had the same problem, but it took me 20 mins to download the corrupt 
  124. little bastard. I looked the next day and there were two files: MEGA304.ZIP and
  125. MEGA304B.ZIP, MEGA304.ZIP is dated jun 1, and it isn't corrupt. MEGA304B.ZIP is
  126. dated jun 2, and is. Watch out!

  128. After my little downloading problem (20 minutes for 280K!!!!! This is ludicrous)
  129. I successfully installed MEGAEM, but I still can't get sound in Magic Carpet. I
  130. wasn't really expecting it, but when the manual says it works, it's reasonable
  131. to assume that it does, so if anyone HAS got it to run with both music & sound,
  132. please tell (I have GUS 3.4 1Mb).

  153. What about changing the settings in ULTRAMIX.INI and trying ULTRAMIX in DOS. Or
  154. use one of the millions of PD dos mixer programs for the GUSMax on the various
  155. GUS ftp archives.

  179. Trackers are MOD type player/writers, though the actual
  180. .MOD format is rarely used in newer types of songs as it
  181. does not support the flexibility as Fast Tracker (XM)and
  182. Scream Tracker (S3M) formats.
  183.  
  184. If you want a tracking composer get either
  185. the Fast Tracker (search archie for FT2),
  186. latest version is 2.03 (not 100% sure about that)
  187.  
  188. Or, get the Scream Tracker v3.21.
  189.  
  190. Scream tracker seems to be simpler to use, but Fast
  191. Tracker is much stronger, offering Sample editors,
  192. 16bit recording, Using a midi keyboard for input (gus only),
  193. and other strong features.

  195. I haven't seen many players play the .XM format tough.
  196. (90% of players play the Scream Tracker's format though...)

  198. Both Trackers work with the GUS, and i belive that the
  199. Fast Tracker was written with GUS in mind, as it only
  200. supports the GUS midi in (SB midi doesn't work).

  203. * Part 2 - Win95 beta

  205. Here's my input on the Win95 beta.  It seems to work MUCH
  206. better than the older win (3.11), and responds faster,
  207. looks ALOT better, and i mean ALOT!.
  208.  
  209. Unfortunantly for me, i use the Windows for Workgroups with
  210. Hebrew language support, which the beta of Win95 simply
  211. does not allow you to install from.
  212.  
  213. I had to do a complete install from dos, which was kinda
  214. annoying.
  215.  
  216. But i was successful in transferring the gus driver from
  217. the old windows, by doing this:
  218.  
  219. 1. Telling win95 i want to install new hardware.
  220. 2. Telling it i don't want it to search for any hardware.
  221. 3. Telling it to look in my windows\system directory
  222.    for the drivers (example: c:\windows\system\)
  223.  
  224. And it worked fine...

  226. I tried to run mk2 from a dos window, and it got stuck, but
  227. within windows itself everything seemed to work fine.

  230. * Part 3 - Toshiba 3601 SCSI

  232. Someone asked about the Toshiba 3601 SCSI x4+ cdrom.

  234. By chance... i own such a CD-Rom, and...
  235.  
  236. I connected it to an Adaptec Fast SCSI controller, and it works just
  237. fine, the thing is, that the controller came on IRQ 11, and caused
  238. havoc, so just switch it to IRQ 15, and you're fine. Also notice that
  239. the controller comes on port 330, which tends to cause all sort
  240. of wierd stuff to happen with roland emulation (switch emulation to
  241. 300 if possible).

  243. The only problem i couldn't solve is that for some strange reason
  244. i couldn't get CD-Audio to work well (sound played from music CDs),
  245. it played it only in one channel (left), but when i connected headphones
  246. to the CD-Headphone plug, the sound was stereo, i have an old GUS
  247. so the problem may be there, it may also be a faulty cable connecting
  248. the CD-Audio to the GUS-CD Audio connection, but this doesn't bother me,
  249. since im not actually playing music from the CD-Rom, and i only seen 2-3
  250. games that played recorded songs via the CD-Audio cable.

  305.     Hmmm, I thought Ultramix works only under Windows since in 
  306. Windows, it works fine.  DOS is where the problem lies...  I have tried 
  307. GUSMIX though and the same thing happens...  Ofcourse, this may all have 
  308. a problem to do with the Intel Triton chipset based ASUS P54TP4 P5-90 
  309. motherboard I used since two days ago since Windows would lock up one 
  310. minute after I start it up or sooner if I decided to try MODUS or 
  311. something.  In DOS, I noticed when using GUSMOD, it sounds like static 
  312. while MIDIDEMO would play the first note and lockup.  I am using the 
  313. v3.53 disks with a GUSMax v1.8 board so are there problems with the v3.53 
  314. disks?  Any help would be appreciated...  Thanks!

  331. The SAW demo doesn't work for me, perhaps because I have the regular 
  332. UltraSound (8-bit recording).  Can anyone tell me if this hard disk 
  333. recorder works at least for the MAX?  If it does, then I suppose I'll 
  334. upgrade to 16-bit recording (perhaps wait for the Interwave).  Failing 
  335. that, I tried USS8, which is just a regular recorder, but at least it 
  336. allows mixing.  BUT, at 44100 khz sampling, I only get up to 45 seconds 
  337. of recording, after which it stops automatically.  I have *way* more hard 
  338. drive space, so theoretically I should be able to record longer.  Is 
  339. there a work around for this, or is it just software limited?  Does USS16 
  340. have this 45 second or so limit, or can those of you with the MAX or the 
  341. DB have hard disk space limited recording?

  351. Did anyone try this combo -- Megaem 3.04b with X-Wing?  Things I noticed 
  352. are that the music can now fade in and out during transition scenes, and 
  353. it quiets down when speech is played.  Also, no more annoying high 
  354. pitched squeals as X-Wings fly by.  This is replaced by less annoying 
  355. applause patch (which actually sounds okay for the shuttle, considering 
  356. the cheesy cool sound effects in the movie anyway, such as an old truck 
  357. engine mixed with a cow mooing for light sabers).  But some problems 
  358. arise now, such as notes getting clipped off, so lots of staccato played 
  359. instead of desired orchestral legato in previous Megaem.  Also, 
  360. occasional random noises occur, and SB digital FX sometimes does not play 
  361. at all (such as ordering wingman to attack -- he only speaks once, but 
  362. doesn't afterwards).  At least 3.04b now works with this particular 
  363. LucasArts game; 3.03b didn't.

  375.      I guess many of you are curious about the set of files called 
  376. GUS Pro that appeared on Epas.  I was too and downloaded them all, 
  377. backed up my PAT files and installed it.
  378.  
  379.      It came with other thigs too like MegaEM 3.03 (useless since 
  380. 3.04 is out) and a special BNK file for 1024K cards.
  381.  
  382.      But my concern was the quality of the patches that the author 
  383. claims to be of higher quality and the ones given with the GUS.  But 
  384. my question is: He's distributing copyrighted materiel with his 
  385. package so is that a legal package?
  386.  
  387.      Anyways, I did my testings with the following MIDI files:
  388.  
  389. CATS_IN.MID (Cats In The Craddle - Ugly Kid Joe style)
  390.    A definite yes!  I love the guitar sound and the drums.  If really 
  391. gives the song a nice feeling.  The song really has bass and that's 
  392. something the GUS patches were missing.
  393.  
  394. THE_WAY.MID
  395.    No.  One of the instruments is _really_ off note.  And the snare 
  396. drum, while sounding extremely good on songs like Cats In The 
  397. Craddle, just doesn't fit there.

  399. SOCKHOP.MID
  400.    This is where I disdovered how bad the piano patch is.  With the 
  401. GUS patches, it's a piano playing and the music is very very good.  
  402. But with GUSPro, it's just crap.  But to test the piano a bit more, I 
  403. decided to play "Right Now" from Van Halen.

  405. RIGHTNOW.MOD
  406.    The piano is _really_ disgusting.  Good thing I backed up my old 
  407. patches...

  409. Careless Whisper from Wham
  410.    That copy that I have (one of many variations) sounds incredibly 
  411. good on the GUS with the original patches.  So I thought it would a 
  412. great test for GUS Pro.  It starts with an electronic piano that 
  413. sounds just right with the old patches, doesn't sound good with 
  414. GUSPro.  The rest is okay, but I still prefer it with the GUS 
  415. patches.

  417. ATSWANTS.MID (All That She Wants from Ace Of Bass)
  418.    I used this one to test the bass.  And bass I got!  The author of 
  419. GUSPro is on the right track here.  Feeling that bass was _really_ 
  420. nice!

  422. 2001.MID (Soundtrack of 2001:A Space Odissey)
  423.    One of the trumpets had a background noise that was extremely 
  424. annoying.  I think that that particular patch has a quality problem.  
  425. But that piece of music really sounded good with GUSPro and the bass 
  426. added a lot to the power of that classic.

  428. OXYGEN4.MID
  429.    Finally!!!  A part that was sounding so bad on the GUS patches now 
  430. sounds just right.  But something else now sounds wrong.  But the 
  431. problems resides in the patch mapping.  Where a nice synth sound is 
  432. supposed to play, I have applauses (??!?) instead.
  433.  
  434.      I played with more MIDI files, but I think this post is long 
  435. enough.  I love the bass of some patches.  They really add something 
  436. to my MIDIs, but there are some (like the Orchestra Hit) that are way 
  437. off-note.  The snare patch also annoyed me in some MIDI files...  I 
  438. think I'll unzip my old GUS patches now...

  498.     I mentioned earlier I am having lots of problems with the GUSMax 
  499. and a Intel Triton based motherboard, the ASUS P54TP4, it turns out that 
  500. the motherboard doesn't support NMI since the Intel Triton chipset 
  501. doesn't have parity checking so anyways, I have updated my GUS drivers to 
  502. v4.11 and it still locks up in both DOS and Windows so does anyone know 
  503. if the machine is supposed to lock up if it doesn't support NMI?  What I 
  504. don't get is that SBOS loaded fine since I thought SBOS was supposed to 
  505. not load if there isn't NMI?
  506.  
  507.     Also, for the ultramixer, what should the correct line in volume 
  508. be since at 0dB, it is alot lower than the signal from the source since 
  509. when I directly connect the source to the AR Powered partners Speakers, 
  510. it is alot louder while going through the GUSMax, it is alot lower.  This 
  511. happens in Windows as well... On the regular GUS, the volume is correct 
  512. for some reason, any ideas?
